AKRON (March 12)—With fiscal 2000 sales of 223.3 million units, Goodyear lays claim to the title of the world´s largest tire maker, according to the company´s recent 10-K filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company´s sales represent 23 percent of the estimated world market of 892 million units, Goodyear said. In North America, Goodyear claims a 31.1-percent market share. Of the 223.3 million units sold last year, 37.3 million, or 16 percent, came from the Dunlop tire ventures in North America and Europe which Goodyear acquired in fall 1999. From a dollar sales volume perspective, Goodyear reported sales from its various tire divisions of $12.7 billion last year, a total that falls short of the currency-inflated tire-related sales claimed by both Bridgestone Corp. and Groupe Michelin.
