SALABERRY-DE-VALLEYFIELD, Quebec (Feb. 28)—The United Steelworkers of America, whose Local 919 has been on strike for 10 months at Goodyear´s Valleyfield tire plant, says the company is wasting money fighting the union in their labor dispute. The USWA claims Goodyear has squandered nearly $500,000 on legal expenses during the strike. The union also said that if Goodyear is in violation of Quebec labor laws during the strike by using replacement workers, the company could be liable for more than $3.2 million. Goodyear said it did not know where the union came up with its estimated spending and penalty figures. A Goodyear spokesman said the firm is concerned about the people involved in the strike, which admittedly has been continuing for a long period of time.
