SAGINAW, Mich. (Jan. 29)—Delphi Saginaw Steering Systems will invest up to $315 million in its Buena Vista Township operations near Saginaw to enable production of its E*Steer electronic power steering system and improve process technology for related product lines. Delphi was awarded a Brownfield Redevelopment Single Business Tax Credit from the State of Michigan for an undisclosed amount, which, coupled with support from United Auto Workers Local 699, convinced the firm to retain 500 jobs at the site and put in new steering technologies. "As a global leader in steering systems, remaining competitive is critical to Delphi´s future success," said Paul J. Tosch, president of Delphi Saginaw Steering Systems and a vice president of the company. Delphi´s successful launch of its electronic power steering system in the fall on the Fiat Punto has brought new customers for the product in both Europe and the U.S., the manufacturer said.
