WOLVERHAMPTON, England (Jan. 16)—Goodyear (U.K.) Ltd. has halted 285 of the 500 job cuts announced at its Wolverhampton tire plant on Jan. 8 after the work force had voted down its plans for a new shift pattern. The reprieve is at the request of the national unions and follows feedback from the shopfloor that workers were unclear about what had been proposed in the ballot, according to a Goodyear spokesman. "Instead of the full 500 we have only elected to announce 215 redundancies. Union officers have asked Goodyear management to make only the minimum number of redundancies while we go through further discussions to clarify a number of points," he said.
