NEW HAVEN, Conn. (Jan. 4)—Pirelli Tire North America ceased operations at its lone U.S. tire factory in Hanford, California, today after discussions between company and union officials failed to save the plant. Pirelli gave a six-month closure notice for the facility in October, saying that the plant´s cost structure wasn´t competitive with other Pirelli tire factories. Under terms of its union contract with USWA Local 703, all workers at the plant will receive full pay and benefits through April 5, when the six-month notice would have expired. Production of Pirelli lines made in Hanford will be picked up by Pirelli factories in Europe and South America, according to a company spokesman.
