PITTSBURGH (Dec. 18)—George Becker, president of the United Steelworkers of America union since 1994, announced his retirement Dec. 14. The 72-year-old Becker will step down Feb. 28, 2001, when current USWA Secretary-Treasurer Leo Gerard will take his place. Becker was in office when the USWA merged with the United Rubber Workers in 1995 and later settled a 27-month contract dispute with Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. by negotiating a three-year deal for the company´s organized tire and rubber workers.
