ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (Sept. 15)—An employee of Unique Fabricating Inc. died Sept. 13 after the steel press she was working on crushed her. Janis Ruston, 53, leaned her upper torso into the press to pull a stray piece of material out of the way when the press operator, who did not see Ruston under the press, set it in motion. Ruston, a packing leader and seven-year veteran of the company, had trained many employees on the floor. Exactly why she by-passed guarding to enter the press from the side area when she was packing finished components is unclear, said Unique President Doug Stahl. ``We´re just devastated over it. It´s a freak accident that´s just awful,´´ he said.
