AKRON (Sept. 14)—Groupe Michelin´s development of the steel-belted radial tire was honored Sept. 13 as the highest technological achievement in the tire industry in the 20th century. Don Baldwin, Michelin North America Inc. manager of new business development, accepted the Grand Trilogy Award during ceremonies held in conjunction with the International Tire Exhibition and Conference. The radial tire was named the top innovation in the Product Category of the awards, while Alpha Technologies Inc.´s development of the rheometer was the winner in the Testing Category and Farrel Corp.´s Banbury-brand mixer was the winner in the Process category. As Grand Prize winner, Michelin received $5,000 to be donated as a scholarship to the school of its choice and a specially commissioned piece of art created by Akron artist Don Drumm. The other winners received $1,000 to be donated as a scholarship.
