WASHINGTON (Sept. 7)—Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. will decide "within days" whether to agree to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration´s request to add 1.4 million tires to the current 6.5 million tire recall, company officials said during a congressional hearing. The claims data NHTSA used to identify defects in the tires can be inaccurate, and Bridgestone/Firestone wants to review other data before making its final decision, the company said. While the firm declined NHTSA´s recall recommendation, it did offer to inspect and replace free of charge any of those tires which consumers brought in to Firestone dealers or company-owned stores.
