DETROIT (Sept. 5)—Ford Motor Co. has selected Michelin North America Inc. to be its second supplier of tires for the 2002 Explorer, ending Bridgestone/Firestone Inc.´s status of sole supplier to the nation´s most popular sport-utility vehicle. Officially, Ford has confirmed it will dual source and declined to specify the second tire maker, but a source at the company confirmed the change. Ford didn´t disclose what percentage of tires Michelin will provide. Firestone will manufacture a revised 16-inch tire designed to accommodate the new independent rear suspension on the 2002 Explorer, a Ford spokesman said.
