BURLINGTON, Wis. (Aug. 10)—The first strike in Lavelle Industries Inc.´s 88-year history began Aug. 5 as the members of United Steelworkers Local 892 overwhelmingly rejected the company´s three-year contract proposal. The 151-member union, which staffs the majority of production jobs at the Burlington-based custom rubber molder, also rejected a counter-proposal Aug. 8, putting the possibility of a short strike in serious doubt. The main issue in the labor dispute is health insurance payments, and no further talks are scheduled.
