WASHINGTON (Aug. 4)—Sears, Roebuck & Co. announced it is pulling some Firestone ATX, ATX II and Wilderness tires from sale at its 780 Sears Tire Centers and 350 National Tire & Battery stores pending further information from Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. A spokeswoman said only one size—the 235-width, a custom-made tire and not high-volume—was being discontinued. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration now says it knows of 193 crashes and 21 deaths allegedly traceable to tread separation in the ATX and Wilderness tires.
