ERLANGER, Ky. (Aug. 2)—Toyota Motor Manufacturing North America Inc. is requiring its North American suppliers to comply with several environmental standards specified in the "Green Supplier Guideline: Leadership in Environmental Performance" brochure it will begin distributing this month. As part of the Toyota Supplier Environmental Program, about 500 direct and in-direct suppliers to the auto maker will be required to obtain ISO-14001 certification by Dec. 31, 2003; to begin phasing out 450 chemicals and substances the car maker has deemed toxic as of Aug. 1; and to develop policies and procedures to comply with all state, federal and international hazardous materials transportation requirements.
