ST. LOUIS (Aug. 2)—Union representatives from nine countries agreed to form a global network of organized Bridgestone Corp. employees during a two-day conference held July 31 and Aug. 1 in St. Louis. The 75 delegates, including several from the United Steelworkers of America, which staffs some of the company´s Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. subsidiary plants in the U.S., pledged to unite for their "mutual defense and advancement." The conference attendees said they would support the USWA in its ongoing contract talks with Bridgestone/Firestone and would take solidarity action if the company refuses to negotiate a fair agreement with the union. The conference was co-sponsored by the USWA and its global affiliate, the International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers´ Unions.
