ARLINGTON, Va. (Aug. 1)—Strategic Safety, an Arlington-based auto safety research firm, is calling on Ford Motor Co. and Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. to recall Ford Explorers from model years 1991-2000 to replace Firestone ATX, ATX II and Wilderness tires on which the treads allegedly may separate. Strategic Safety official Sean Kane said "at least 100 serious injuries and fatalities" can be traced to Explorers equipped with the Firestone radials, and also said Ford already is recalling the vehicles and tires in Venezuela. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating reports of tread separation involving these tires, and about 25 lawsuits have been filed against Ford and Bridgestone/Firestone on this issue.
