CLERMONT-FERRAND, France (May 31)—For the first time in company history, Groupe Michelin´s North American operations sold more tires their counterparts in Europe, Michelin Chairman Edouard Michelin told shareholders at the company´s annual general meeting. Noting the billions of dollars of investments committed to company facilities in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, Michelin called Michelin North America Inc. "the most active tire maker on the continent," and credited Michelin North America with contributing "significantly more and more" to the group´s bottom line. While Michelin sold more tires in North America than in Europe, a spokesman said, Michelin´s sales in Europe are still larger because of the group´s retailing activities and wheel manufacturing and other non-tire businesses.
