MONTGOMERY, Ala. (April 27)—At the end of their session, members of the Alabama House of Representatives tried to reach a compromise on a bill which would place a $2 fee on each new tire sold in the state to fund the hiring of state troopers. Rep. Angelo Mancuso, D-4th District, sponsored the bill at the behest of the Alabama State Troopers Association, but it was stopped in the House Ways and Means Committee. Mancuso said he will rewrite the legislation to change the funding mechanism, at the suggestion of Rep. H. Mac Gipson Jr., R-88th District, a board member and former president of the Alabama Tire Dealers Association.
