ST. LOUIS (April 19)—The United Steelworkers of America and tire maker Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. agreed April 18 to extend their three-year master agreement past the April 23 deadline. The two sides will continue to negotiate in St. Louis on a day-to-day basis. Either party can terminate the extension with 14-day notice. The master agreement covers 8,000 USWA workers in nine U.S. Bridgestone/Firestone tire and non-tire facilities. The union announced April 7 it had chosen the firm as its target company for 2000 pattern bargaining.
