CINCINNATI, Ohio (April 11)—The United Steelworkers union has chosen Bridgestone/Firestone Inc. as its target company for 2000 labor negotiations within the tire industry. The union announced April 7 it will try to negotiate a master contract with the Nashville, Tenn.-based tire maker and establish a pattern with other tire and rubber companies. A pattern will establish wages and benefits across the industry and eliminate ``cutthroat competition´´ among its workers, the USWA said. Bridgestone/Firestone´s current master pact, which expires April 23, covers workers at three tire and three non-tire plants. Several other tire companies, including Goodyear and Michelin North America Inc., have contract expirations or midterm re-openers to deal with in 2000.
