GADSDEN, Ala. (March 9)—Goodyear has asked for $8 million in government aid to help tear down 1.6 million square feet of unused space at its Gadsden tire plant. If the state, county and city governments agree to Goodyear´s request, the firm said it may invest $100 million over several years in the factory to increase capacity and upgrade the unit from "swing plant" status to a full, competitive global factory. That investment, however, also is contingent upon market conditions remaining favorable and productivity at the plant remaining high.
