LANDOVER, Md. (Feb. 25)—A pile of 600 scrap tires dumped illegally near Landover is the springboard for the Maryland Tire Dealers Association to issue a protest against what it considers the state´s wrongheaded scrap tire control policies. The tires dumped in Lower Beaverdam Creek, according to the MTDA, underline the fact that of $5 million in tire recycling fees collected on new tire sales last year, only about $200,000 actually went toward scrap tire cleanup and recycling. "Tire dealers say their customers are outraged at paying a `tire recycling fee´ only to see it spent on everything but tire recycling," the association said in a news release.
