EVERBERG, Belgium-ICI P.L.C. plans to invest about $80 million in the next few years to double capacity at its Wilton, England, aniline plant.
The driving force for the expansion is the ``continued growth of the MDI (methylene diphenyl diisocyanate) market,'' said Patrick Thomas, business director of ICI Polyurethanes. About 75 percent of aniline demand is for MDI production.
ICI also is the leading supplier of aniline to the rubber chemicals business via the merchant market, he said.
The current Wilton plant has a capacity of 200,000 metric tons a year, which makes it the world's largest aniline plant, Thomas said. The expansion project will begin later this year.
The first new capacity will come on stream during 1996.
