Trelleborg Sealing Solutions buys MG Silikon, enhances aerospace offerings

TRELLEBORG, Sweden—Trelleborg Sealing Solutions has expanded its aerospace industry portfolio with the acquisition of MG Silikon GmbH.

The company, which specializes in composite parts—including metal, epoxy resin, plastic, copper, ceramic and fabric—for aerospace and industrial applications, had been part of the Saint-Gobain Group.

An agreement has been signed for the transaction, however it remains subject to approval from certain authorities. Terms of the pending transaction, set to close in the fourth quarter of this year, were not disclosed.

"The aerospace industry is recovering strongly after the pandemic, and is expected to show healthy growth for several years to come," said Peter Hahn, president of Trelleborg Sealing Solutions. "With the acquisition of MG Silikon, we increase the production capacity of airframe seals and strengthen our offering in sealing solutions for cabin interiors, which is a strategic growth area for us."

Previously, Trelleborg's offerings for cabin interiors had been limited. However, the acquisition creates "new and exciting opportunities for us," Hahn said.

MG Silikon also manufactures engineered seals for general industry, such as building and construction and the rail industry.

"This acquisition complements us in several important areas, and we foresee synergies in both sales and supply chains," Hahn said.

MG Silikon is based in Lindau, Germany, and recorded sales of approximately $11.8 million in 2021.

The company also makes consumer appliances seals, electronic appliance seals, LSR parts, high-precision silicone parts and plates, silicone rubber profiles and molded parts, and manufactures standard profiles for Airbus.

Trelleborg Group, of which Trelleborg Sealing Solutions is a major segment, has average annual sales of annual sales of about $3.35 billion and operates in about 50 countries.
