Smithers enters dry commodities testing with Ssp acquisition

AKRON—Smithers, a testing and consulting agency for a range of industries, is moving into the dry commodities space with the purchase of Netherlands-based Ssp.

While Ssp is well-known in Europe for its loading and discharge management, weight and tallying controls, sampling and sample preparation, becoming part of the Smithers team will allow Ssp to expand its footprint in North America and Asia-Pacific regions.

Ssp, which works in solid fuels, metals and minerals, also maintains facilities in Italy.

"Ssp is an exciting addition to Smithers because we share a steadfast commitment to a client-first culture," said Michael Hochschwender, chief executive officer of Smithers. "We believe the Ssp culture of building trusted relationships is consistent with Smithers goal of helping our clients bring great products to market by delivering accurate data, on time, with high touch."

Rav Lally of Smithers has been appointed group president.

"Smithers has an excellent reputation for providing testing, inspection and compliance services across a number of different markets," Lally said. "The acquisition of Ssp offers Smithers an opportunity to draw on that experience while expanding into an exciting new service line."

Ssp Managing Director Dennis van der Burgh will continue to lead Ssp under the Smithers ownership.
