Tire companies are incorporating higher levels of silica into tread compounds to meet evolving performance requirements. The utilization of higher silica levels offers advantages such as improved wet traction, wear resistance, and handling. However, there are challenges associated with achieving these enhanced properties, including increased viscosity, processing difficulties, and reduced fuel economy. Furthermore, higher temperature silanization has been found to improve wear and fuel economy but exacerbate viscosity issues. Any disruptions or delays in the process can be detrimental to the silanization reaction, as it is highly sensitive to time and temperature. In such cases, the compound may experience pre-scorch, resulting in batch variability and increased scrap levels.
SureMix® S6, developed by Polymer Solutions Group, is a performance-optimizing process additive that addresses these challenges. It effectively enhances processability, reduces the number of mix-passes or cycle times, and improves extrusion smoothness, all while maintaining modulus, tensile properties, and optimizing dynamic characteristics. In this study, the compounds were subjected to high-temperature silanization to simulate mixing or process upsets. The results demonstrate the effective use of SureMix® S6 in maintaining processability, reducing scrap, and optimizing compound performance. Additionally, combining high-temperature silanization with SureMix® sets a new benchmark for performance.
