Message From The Conference Chairman
![]() The First Distinguished Technology Achievement Medal Presentation Wednesday, September 17, 2008 The ITEC Distinguished Technology Achievement Medal was created to recognize a recipient whose contribution of pioneering research in tire construction, tread design and manufacturing, coupled with engineering and materials innovations, have significantly contributed to the betterment of society, safety of transportation and global tire technology. The selection was based upon an in-depth review of the literature, patents and the fact that tire manufacturers world-wide have adapted these technologies for their own products. The first ITEC DISTINGUISHED TECHNOLOGY ACHIEVEMENT MEDAL will be presented to Maurizio Boiocchi, Senior Vice President and Global Director, Research and Development, at Pirelli Tyre S.p.A. The presentation will be made by Syed K. Mowdood, Ph.D.,Consultant, Pirelli Tyre S.p.A on Wednesday, September 17. This will offer ITEC delegates a unique insight into the tire innovation process and hopefully embolden individuals to evolve their own creative ideas into commercially accepted product innovations for their companies. Mr. Boiocchi highly deserves the award for his contribution to the development and manufacturing of the first tire containing Nylon zero degree overlay, the P3, introduced to the market in 1973. Among his peers in the tire industry, he is recognized for being the force of creativity, innovation, and for the pursuit of excellence in design, performance and safety. He has been the creative force behind Pirelli’s dominance in high performance tires. According to Mr. Mowdood, “I met Maurizio some 20 years ago when Pirelli acquired Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company where I was working as a Director of Tire Materials Engineering. I was impressed with his unassuming brilliance, humility and spark of creativity. I call Maurizio the ‘incubator’ of tire innovation. He never seems to be thwarted by difficult challenges but makes each obstacle in the path of innovation a milestone of achievement. It is a rare accomplishment for any, where one’s ideas are transformed from conceptual stage to market success.” The ITEC Distinguished Technology Achievement Medal and Mr. Boiocchi’s presentation will highlight the ITEC papers track on High Performance Tires. The medal presentation and papers track are open to ITEC Full Three Day Conference delegates or Wednesday Single Day Conference registrants. “It should be noted that most of his accomplishments remain confidential and cannot be fully revealed to supplement the case for his nomination; nevertheless, his more than 25 published patents, presentations, and more than 24 commercially successful tire lines conceived and developed by him are a testament to his creativity and accomplishment,” said Mr. Mowdood.
