The advent of extremely high loadings of silica in tire tread compounds - to achieve improved fuel economy through lower rolling resistance at highway speeds - has caused several problems related to compound processing. Since silica has more attractive forces to it rather than to the conventional tire tread polymers, dispersing the silica to achieve the desired performance results has proven extremely difficult.
