The tire industry has been facing many challenges to better meet the expectations of the marketplace. One of these challenges is to produce a tire which is consistent in performance throughout its service life. There are extensive technological programs in progress by both suppliers and manufacturers in the rubber industry to address this critical issue. For a number of years, there have been many approaches developed to address the heat resistance issue. However, most of these approaches did not meet the cost/performance requirement the industry was looking for. The classical method of reducing sulfur content in the crosslinks through the use of the more efficient vulcanization systems would provide a stable vulcanizate upon aging. However, there is trade-off in dynamic properties such as fatigue and tear. The effect of anerobic and aerobic aging on compound properties has generated much interested and resulted in the continuous search for solutions to this important industry need. This paper gives a review of the work done at Flexsys to address these issues.
