A COST EFFECTIVE ALTERNATE METHOD FOR THE PRODUCTION OF IMPROVED 'PIN VENT HOLES'

The technical paper as well as the presentation will be part of the proceeding of the International Tire Exhibition & Conference 2006. Both the technical paper and presentation will cover a brief history of the advancements in the Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) process and how the advancements have culminated into the refinement of the process better know as "CNC EDM fast hole drilling". The "fast hole" drilling process will be examined in detail from the sample work pieces, electrodes and EDM power supply to the role the five axis computer numerical control (CNC) plays in the process. With this background data in mind a complete study will be shown step by step in the drilling and "subland" (counter boring) drilling "pin vent holes" in tire mold making. The case study will also cover the effects of the EDM process on hole surface finish in the most commonly used materials in tire molds. Other items to be covered will be a new and novel method for the production of taper draft holes via manipulating the power supply and CNC motion control. A case study will also supply costing models in commonly used mold alloys for the evaluation and review by the mold making community.
