Reinforcing fillers strongly influence the performance and durability of rubber articles. This wellknown phenomenon "rubber reinforcement" by very fine particles in the nanometer range is a result of the strong interaction with the elastomer matrix. The nature and the mechanics of rubber reinforcement in general are still the subject of intensive debates. There is evidence that both physical and chemical attachments of the molecular polymer chains to the filler surface contribute to the reinforcing effect.
