A wide variety of items are molded of rubber with a metal or plastic insert in the mold. To join the rubber to the insert, an adhesive needs to be applied to the insert prior to molding. This paper will consider some of the adhesive preparation and application steps, parts design, and molding operation that need to be addressed to prevent bond failures. In addition, troubleshooting bond failures will be discussed.
