As far back as the 1930's, companies molding rubber have wanted to incorporate metal or textile inserts for support or reinforcement. Attachment could be done outside the mold after the rubber part is vulcanized (PV or post-vulcanization bonding) but in many instances, it is desirable to incorporate metal or fabric within the rubber. This paper will describe use and application of adhesives designed specifically for insert mold bonding of silicone to other substrates used in the manufacure of rubber rolls and shaft seals for automotive transmission applications. Troubleshooting bond failures will also be discussed.
