Foamed latex is now being recognized as a premier component in an array of high quality end products with specialty sleep products being a rapidly growing market in the US. The advancement of foamed latex dates back to 1914 with true commercial development commencing in the late 1920s. In 1929 the Dunlop Rubber Company applied for the first two relevant patents for a commercial process. Circa 1946, Leon and Joseph Talalay of B.F. Goodrich begin pioneering what is known today as the “Talalay” process of producing fine foamed latex. This paper will concentrate on the evolution of foamed rubber, address the technologies that influenced its growth, and discuss today’s state-of-the-art. Compounding, gelling, vulcanization, washing and drying will be addressed as well as the measurement of physical properties to define quality.
